Actual Survey Report of the Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs in Ulsan 국보 147호, 울산 천전리암각화 정밀 실측 영문 보고서 발간 The Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs?No. 147 National Treasure of South Korea?consist of a large rectangular rock panel under a low hill, and several other rocks located north of this main panel about 2 kilometers from the Bangudae Petroglyphs in Ulsan. The numerous figures of deer, dogs, unidentifiable animals, human faces, full-length human bodies, geometric patterns, and more than 1,000 inscribed letters are carved on the panel. The Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs in Ulsan is an actual survey report of the Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs. This book is published by the Bangudae Petroglyphs Institute of University of Ulsan. This report is composed of the analysis, categorization, and cataloguing of the all the carvings in the Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs. Through the surveys, unrecognized carvings were discovered and many textual inscriptions?showing a relationship between Silla Kingdoms and Ulsan area?were decoded. Publication of this book is a great step forward in the study of this important site, an accomplishment that should be recognized by scholars both in and outside Korea studying rock art sites, ancient texts, and other historic relics. In fact, several survey reports of the site have been made, focusing on figures or inscriptions or on particular works or techniques, depending on the interests of the researchers. 울산대학교 반구대암각화유적보존연구소는 반구대를 비롯한 한국의 고대 암각화를 세계에 알리고 해당 연구자들과의 소통과 협력을 위해 영문 학술자료를 발간하고 있다. 그 작업의 일환인 『The Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs in Ulsan』이 한국과 미국에서 동시 출간되었다. 해당 도서는 울주 천전리각석을 정밀 실측하여, 암각화에 새겨진 선사시대 및 역사시대 그림과 명문을 종류별로 분류하고, 번호를 부여하는 방식으로 진행되었다. 이번 작업을 통해 기존에 알려진 것과는 다른 새로운 암각화 및 세선각화가 다수 확인되었고 신라 왕실과 울산 지역과의 관계를 추정할 수 있는 다수의 명문이 추가 판독되었다. 이 책은 천전리암각화의 다양한 표현과 명문에 대한 객관적인 연구 자료를 제시하여 새로운 연구와 논의가 국제적으로 진행될 수 있게 한 점에서 그 학술적 가치와 의미가 크다. 발간을 계기로 천전리암각화에 대한 국제적인 연구가 활성화 되고 천전리암각화가 지닌 문화유산으로서의 세계적 의미와 가치도 재평가 될 것으로 예상한다.

저자 : 울산대학교 반구대암각화유적보존연구소 Bangudae Petroglyphs Institute, University of Ulsan The Institute was established in 2010 to study domestic and foreign petroglyph site including Bangudae Petroglyphs and to research case study of rock art’s conservation and management. With the awareness of the Bangudae Petroglyphs’ Conservation, they hosted “The First International Symposium on Petroglyphs” with the Korean Studies Institute of Harvard University on April, 2012. And the World Petroglyphs Research series was launched in 2013 with the purpose of locating the Bangudae petroglyphs of Ulsan in the larger context of the world’s prehistoric rock art. 울산대학교 반구대암각화유적보존연구소 반구대암각화 및 국내외 주요 암각화 유적의 보존 방안 및 역사적 가치 연구를 위하여 2010년 설립되었다. 암각화 유적의 현황 파악과 보존 대책을 수립하고, 유적과 관련된 문화, 예술, 사회, 역사, 생태환경 문제를 연구하고 있다. 2011, 2012년에는 반구대암각화의 보존과 관리를 위해 하버드대학 한국학 연구소와 함께 국제학술대회를 개최하였으며, 2013년부터 오 년 기획으로, 반구대를 중심으로 한 국내와 세계의 암각화 연구를 다루는 영문 학술도서 집필을 하고 있다.
